Billions pour into #AI as emissions rise - returns stay pitiful
AI continues to improve – at least according to benchmarks. But promised benefits have largely yet to materialize while models are increasing in size and becoming more computationally demanding, #greenhousegas #emissions from AI training continue to rise.
These are some takeaways from the AI Index Report 2025, a lengthy and in-depth publication from Stanford University's Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI)

The Register · Billions pour into AI as emissions rise - returns stay pitiful, say Stanford boffinsBy Dan Robinson

An accord reached in London under the International #Maritime Organization [#IMO], a #UN agency, would require every ship that ferries goods across the oceans to lower their #GreenhouseGas #emissions or pay a fee.

The targets fall short of what many had hoped. Still, it’s the first time a global industry would face a price on its #climate #pollution no matter where in the world it operates. The proceeds would be used mainly to help the industry move to cleaner fuels.

Trump’s #EPA Plans to Stop Collecting #GreenhouseGas #Emissions Data From Most #Polluters
#Climate experts expressed shock and dismay. “It would be a bit like unplugging the equipment that monitors the vital signs of a patient that is critically ill,” one said.
The move would affect thousands of industrial facilities across the country, including #oil refineries, #powerplants and #coal #mines as well as those that make #petrochemicals, cement, glass, iron and steel.
