If Montgomery "irreparably tarnished" his reputation by calling DeSantis PR "propaganda" then for Axios in Florida anyway, the foundation of a journalism reputation appears to be maintaining a fetal position of avoiding saying/publishing anything that might attract the attention of DeSantis henchpeople https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2023/03/15/axios-reporter-ben-montgomery-fired/
Trying to better describe the problem with Axios and DeSantis. The Montgomery firing demonstrates the untenability of "above the fray" style journalism; DeSantis has set up an organization whose explicit purpose is advancing false narratives and performatively antagonizing MSM journalists. If you treat the DeSantis political project as conventional politics, that fails. If you call it out, that also fails. Either way, a win for DeSantis and a failure for journalism/society.
